Vertigo is a specific type of dizziness where you feel a spinning or movement sensation, even when you are still. Dizziness is a broader term that can include light-headedness, imbalance, or disorientation. At FxM, we assess both to determine whether the cause is related to the inner ear, vestibular system, or other factors.
BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is one of the most common causes of vertigo and is caused by small crystals in the inner ear becoming displaced. Physiotherapy, specifically vestibular rehabilitation, is highly effective in treating BPPV using repositioning techniques that help move these crystals back into place.
Vestibular physiotherapy helps retrain the balance system in your inner ear and brain. At Function Matters Physio, treatment may include repositioning manoeuvres (for BPPV), balance retraining exercises, and gaze stability training to reduce dizziness and improve confidence with movement.
Physiotherapy is most effective for vestibular-related dizziness, including BPPV and balance disorders. However, dizziness can also have neurological, cardiovascular, or medication-related causes. At FxM, we assess your symptoms carefully and refer you back to your GP or specialist if your presentation is not suitable for physiotherapy.
Physiotherapy focuses on diagnosing and treating vestibular system dysfunction through evidence-based assessment, repositioning techniques, and rehabilitation exercises.
Chiropractic care may use spinal adjustments, which are not typically first-line treatment for vestibular disorders unless there is an associated neck-related component.
Osteopathy may include manual therapy approaches that can help with neck-related dizziness or tension, but vestibular rehabilitation exercises are more directly targeted at inner ear balance dysfunction.
At Function Matters Physio, treatment is guided by vestibular assessment findings to ensure the most appropriate and effective approach is used.
Many cases of BPPV improve within 1–2 treatment sessions once the correct repositioning technique is applied. Other vestibular conditions may take longer and require ongoing balance retraining. Recovery time depends on the underlying cause and severity of symptoms.
You should seek assessment if you experience:
Early assessment often leads to faster and more effective treatment outcomes.
